This just shows how much respect you have for the law. It's hard to believe this is coming from a true American.
It actually shows a cultural difference. This is a comment that a Brazilian national would never have made.
Brazil is a very charming and peaceful country, one whose only war before WW2 was in 1870. This reflects an ubiquitous respect for the human life and for the dead in general, friend or foe.

Do you know how time it takes for a Indian or Chinese national to get a green card in the US? 5 years.
How much time for a Brazilian national? Less than 6 months. Reason: there NO backlog for Brazil (ask any immigration lawyer).
No (medium class) Brazilian wants to come to the US, only the poorest and less educated folks. The US is viewed by most not as an evil but as a cold, unhappy country full of dry, mean people.
Let the boy stay there. He will be much happier.
