  • Perhaps the darkest piece i have ever heard from classical music..

  • so slow... my teacher scolded me when i played this way. but i still love it and feel this. this music changed my life.

  • not even close to katchen, still unparalleled

  • Never heard this music being play so slowly. Kissin plays safe.

  • Never heard this music being play so slowly. Kissin plays safe.

  • I've listened to this piece off and on for 7-8 years as part of sets of Brahm's op.118, but I think this particular performance may be the first time that I've actually really 'heard' the piece. His languishing tempo really lets you experience the voices and chromaticism (more so than usual for Brhams) and matches the tone. I love the staccato B section.

  • @MrOlivermansfeld stimme nicht hundertprozentig zu, der bergwerk- vergleich ließ mich aber herzhaft schmunzeln ;)

  • I'm currently reading an in-depth biography of Brahms, and apparently he wrote these "easier" piano miniatures for Clara Schumann, who by that time was suffering from a variety of ailments that made it painful for her to play her usual repertoire, so she would still be able to play something.

Brahms never accepted a commission to compose, but many of his works were written with performer friends in mind. A very generous man, he supported the careers of many whose talent he admired.

  • Evgeny Kissin. Amen
