The tape can be for several things. One of the most important things when dealing with SS is keeping it in contact with non ferrous metal. The tape in the video is used to prevent that. If you use non Ferrous metal it will not carbonize the SS and possible rust could occur. Very Very rarely do I ever put a clamp on my project when welding SS. I used copper or brass to connect the clamp.

@gamble1997 I believe the tape is to prevent the flange from arcing on the table. Thats why the ground is directly on the work.

@522design 40' on a ladder eh? Must be scab, because all of our UNION jobs are either man lifts, tube and clamp scaffold or spider buckets. If your working 40' in the air off a ladder, and tig welding a stainless joint then we will call you spider man. Give your head a shake. Thank God I work Union, and I do not have to take stupid chances like that. Only the scab sector would do that. Oh ya, let me guess, no harness or fall arrest either eh?

what is the importance of that type of welding pattern? What difference does it make if we do not weld in the pattern that you showed in this video? Is it for strength?
