Does the opening narration remind anyone else of Hemingway?
A deceptively simple, but enormously evocative prose style...
...too pretentious?
Fine, I'll get my coat.

@ishtarg8 Um, I liked the film and not just because of the cute guys, heh.

I film made out of passion. One of my favorite films - If not the favorite film.

when i found the narrator was robert englund, i couldnt believe the actor responsible for freddy kruger could have such a smooth voice
-

I saw this movie when it first came out and at 48 years old it has never left me. I am not a surfer by any means but get the movie and it's meaning. Too bad they don't show it on any of the cable channels but that is why I have the DVD. I have a few tee shirts with the Bear Surfboard logo on them and a hat with the logo on it too.

in the old days, i remember a wind, that would blow down the canyons, it was a hot wind called a santana, and it carried with it the smell of... warm places...it blew the strongest before dawn, across the point,my friends and I would sleep in our cars and the smell of the offshore wind would often wake us...and each morning, we knew this would be a special day....

Possibly; although my ex-wife, sister in law and also the girlfriend of a close friend all loved this film.
I suspect it may have had more to do with Jan-Michael Vincent's tanned six-pack than any empathy with the characters, though...
They were all into Point Break, as well. Probably for similar reasons.

@ishtarg8 . I have offered the DVD to 3 of my girlfriends and none of them got it !...Must be a blokes movie...

I think Milius has kind of mythologised his own youth- that's a photograph of him as a young 'un by his directors credit; but then all of us start to that about our own youth at some point. It's just that most of us don't have several million dollars, a movie crew or the writing talent to help us make something concrete.
I think, "based upon actual events" probably sums it up best.
luv this movie
