Residents and visitors in the city of Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, pitched in to prepare for the coming of Hurricane Irene on Friday, August 26, 2011.

Most people had already evacuated the area but a few diehard tourists remained on the boardwalk and on the beach even as TV crews from across the region reported on the hurricane preparations. Most businesses were closed down in anticipation of the storm and doors and windows were taped or boarded up for safety.

The weather on the day before Hurricane Irene's arrival was clear, calm, and sunny, with temperatures in the high 80s in addition to high humidity.
