@bobbystar101 The CoCo 3 uses a simple 6-bit, host-driven DAC, if my understanding of the machine's specifications is correct.

what is actually the sound chip in a coco?
Is it the obscure 4529 chip that no one has ever created any documentation about?
This is what the dragon schematics indicate :S.
I have no sound and am trying to fix it.

@clownhorse well only limited 16 bit but yea I agree. If only the BBC or commodore used it....

The 6309 was one fast 8-bit chip. (technically it was 16-bit)
I don't understand why it wasn't used in many computers at the time.
Anybody who ever looked at it's instruction set would realise how powerful it was.

What's doubly amazing is that TRS-80 CoCos weren't really spec'd to play audio at all.

Is the 6309 or the 6809 version?. I have the stock 6809 and it works great. Yet another 'impossible' thing done in the CoCo 3. Thanks SM!

Is it interpreting a mod file in real time, or does it require a pre-conversion to something the player can understand?

Yes. It's processing the mod file and mixing the audio samples in real time as it's playing, no pre-conversions required.

This is the 6309 version running up there. The only difference between the 6809 and 6309 versions is that the 6309 one can pull off slightly better sample rates, and it has those little numbers updating under the first 4 bar meters - the 6809 simply says VOLU (for volume) under those bars.
