Rukmani was born Daisy Daniels on the 15th January 1923 in Ramboda, Nuwara Eliya. She studied at St, Mathews College, Dematagoda and St. Clares Wellawatte when her family moved to Colombo. She displayed her talents at the school concerts and took part in school dramas at the very early ages.

Rukmani was discovered for singing by the Sinhala music pioneer, Master H.W. Rupasinghe. She became an overnight singing sensation with her recording with Rupasingher Master, 'Siri Buddhagaya Viharay' in 1939. This paved Rukmani the way to become a Gramophone songstress in the 1930s. During the 40s she joined B.A.W. Jayamanne's Minerva Drama Troupe in Negombo and played the lead role of many succussful stage plays. Success of that lead to her to take part in the first Sinhala Film Kadawunu Poronduwa and become the first Sinhala film heroine in January 1947.

Rukmani was married to Eddie Jayamanne. After Kadawunu Poronduwa, Rukmani acted in many other successful films and sang a string of hits that is popular to date. Her life was cut short by a tragic accident at the Negombo Road, Tudella, Ja-Ela on the 28th October 1978.

The song Thei Pan Dina Dina Vadi Vadiye was featured in the Gypsies Party Time non stop music casette in the 1980s.

  • Hi Vidhura,

Thanks for the comment. I am not sure who did music. Could well be Rupasinghe Master.

  • Hi Jude,

    Another golden oldie.

I wonder who did the music. I feel like the gramophone record goes in circles :)

    Thanks for uploading.
