We ordered a new amp at Retro Electronics from Tonewheel General Hospital for a Leslie cabinet where the amp was missing. The new amp works well but the horn driver was sounding distorted. We disassembled and cleaned the driver which improved it but will also get a new driver just in case the old one still is noisy when reinstalled.

  • So, what was constricting the sound, just dust or something larger between the pole pieces?

  • I think somehow the diaphragm was rubbing up against the magnet somehow...maybe due to dirt trapped in the gap. There was also a felt gasket that had disintegrated and that may have contributed to the problem too.

  • I like those Leslie speakers. I'll never forget the first time I seen one. It was in church and I heard the nice sound it puts out. but what cought my eyes was that I saw something spining in side of it. The horns was spinning and I thought that was so cool.

I've seen some blues bands play their electric guitar through a Leslie speaker.

  • Oh yes, I've always really liked the sound of the Leslie too. One time we worked on one that was primarily used as a guitar amp. It had a solid state preamp built like guitar effects pedal which you could connect two guitars or other instruments too, and a foot switch for fast or slow Leslie effect.

  • Excellent job. I like the Mac Intosh equipment used as a work area too. LOL

  • Thank you...someone sold the shop some equipment a long time ago and that Macintosh amp and tuner were in it. We have another Macintosh solid state preamp we use as a test device to hook up to power amplifiers which don't have their own preamps.

  • I dont know much about these things, but what is the purpose of it having the horns spin?

  • @Koolnote - probably compressed air blown in the mag gap, then very gently on the diaphragm too (fragile)

  • What song did you use in the video?

  • @Bauer931 Did you know one of the horns is actually not used? When it was originally designed and tested it was determined the Doppler effect of the horn wasn't as good as had been planned..so one horn is cast with a plugged entry! The horn is left in place none the less to maintain balance. I am not positive all were made this way.

Leslie's rule the world in "that sound"

  • @estinky

There is a round sort of disc between both motors, look at it´s rubber ring. If it is round the mistake must be elsewhere, if it´s worn out you should change it. But afterwards you got to readjust the pressure of the slow motor.

Maybe the rubber O-rings are too thin. There is a round sort of disc between both motors, look at it´s rubber ring. If it is round the mistake must be elsewhere, if it´s worn out you should change it. But afterwards you got to readjust the pressure of the slow motor.
