January 21, 2010 - Isolated Thunderstorms Over SoCal

On January 21, 2010 unstable conditions spawned dozens of isolated thunderstorms all across SoCal throughout the night. Heavy rain with rainfall rates at up to 1 inch per hour, pea sized hail, winds exceeding 50 mph, and frequent lightning pounded the area. While these isolated cells were not much compared to those in the Midwest, they were a treat for southern California!!

Yeah, we don't see this too often here...Especially in the Winter!

@CaStormChaser HOw often is not too often? Just so I can get an idea.

@VicTheMouth During the Winter we usually see most all of our thunderstorm activity during the daytime. This was the first night time thunderstorm we had this past winter (and the only night, I believe). There was some good instability in the area and we had 5 or 6 good isolated storms go up that night.

I'd say on average maybe 1-2 that occur during the night in the Winter months...During the daylight they seem to occur more frequently (wild guess, avg 30 per Winter) ...Hope that helps! : )

@stormchick17 Yikes! That's not fun at all. There have been some powerful storms for us in the southwest today. I hope tomorrow you can get that tree taken care of! :)

@CaStormChaser Thanks, but I wouldn't get too upset about the lack of storms in the winter Be glad you don't live in my area, november through, but not including, march we never get any thunderstorms.

The hail was pretty intense at times...There were some pretty big stones mixed in there too! (not much compared to the Midwest, but pretty nice to us here in Cali) :D

Ah, January was great!! Wish we could have another month of storms like that again soon!
