Throughout the history of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated, the Miss Black and Gold Pageant has become very near and dear to the hearts of the brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha. The pageant is an outgrowth of the long tradition of Alpha Chapters' designation of outstanding young ladies to serve as role models in the community. The Fraternity recognizes the valuable support rendered to it by the many supporters of Alpha Phi Alpha and this endeavor serves as just one mechanism to applaud such support.
The first Miss Black and Gold Pageant was sponsored by the National Alpha Convention in New York City in 1976, with our first Queen, Miss Denise Smith being crowned at that event. The pageant became a national program of Alpha and a staple at our conferences in 1982, making this year the 25th Annual National Competition under its current format!
Along with the $1,000 scholarship that is sponsored by the Theta Sigma Chapter, our Queen will receive the opportunity to compete at the district (state) level in fall of 2007, along with the winners from other Florida colleges and universities. She also becomes a life long member of the "Theta Sigma Family" and holds a special place in the tradition of Alpha.
The Extraordinary Gentlemen of the Theta Sigma Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. have found our stars and now we are ready to let them glow at their full potential and see who will be the brightest of them all. So prepare for beauty, intelligence, and poise. We ask that you please join us on Friday, April 20, 2007 promptly at 7:06pm in the Reitz Union Grand Ballroom.

1st and far most, I too was in a MISS BLACK & GOLD PAGAENT similar to this one. Just b/c we are woman and competing for a "money" (scholarship) doesn't make it "trash".
The judging panel does not necessarily have to be men just b/c it is hosted by a Fraternity. This give those who are stuggling an opportunity to be rewarded. The competition is based upon self confidence not body type. So what is the issue? Most of the ladies are nice, decent, motivated individuals...not "trash"

These ladies are judged on their interviewing ability, poise and confidence before an audience, eloquence under pressure, and were strong enough to stand in the face of judgement when most people run so next time you'd like to criticize someone who is confident and resourceful enough to use her elegance for scholarship I'd like you to think about how you would be judged? considering your comments, I'd pay attention to the answer.

How dare you!!!!! Go pick on the hundreds of white women wearing string bikini's and don't even showcase any talent. These beautiful black women are in college, nearly fully dressed(they had on full length swimwear), and they had a talent portion. HYPOCRITE!!!

Do you think, mabey, beauty pageants might be a little higher on the food chain than strip joints or rap videos or porn actors? I wonder who will live a better life, the girls in this pageant or the girls in the latest Snoop video or you. I've never been been to one, but I'll bet the audience is overwhelmingly family members and not horndogs.

sygarlandp: Oh yes and parading women around in front of a group of men and giving the best one some money is very classy. I am just calling it what it is- dressed up pretentious trash. Role models? Give me a break.
