  • china and korea has those as well. its really convenient

  • we have something simlar here in so cal la meto has one wich is the standard one and then there is a yellow/orange ish one that is for people 65 and old and people with disabiltys and the yellow one has personal info but i use it all the time and usaly dont take it out of my wallet

  • I live in Yokohama, and a Suica card from JR East for everyday commuting and for anytime I want to take a short trip to Tokyo, Kamakura or Saitama. But I also have an Icoca card from JR West for whenever I head to Osaka/Kyoto/Kobe or Hiroshima. The Icoca card also works here in Kanto but only on JR trains and not the buses/subways. And of course neither works for the shinkansen...

  • I have a suika card too, with it you can just rush in the super markets and steel watermelons.

  • That's really interesting. When I was in Tokyo in November 08, they told me one of those didn't exist any more; but I can't remember which one it was now.

We have a similar thing in London called Oyster. It has no personal details on the front and is blue. We have two types, one for unlimited travel within zones for a set price per month, and a pay as you go card. The pay as you go card used to stop you at the barrier, but apparently now the barrier can add money from your account!

  • We just got a gaijin Japan Rail Pass, a lot easier.

  • Yeah. Suica is cool. I have one of course.

  • The suica card is great even for short term stays! I was only in Tokyo for 11 days, and I only had my card for about 6 days. Haha I *had* to get one because the station I stopped at with my friends didn't have any ticket machines (so odd), only suica.

I went through the initial 2,000 yen really quickly though! I had to add some but that's fine :) It was so useful and it even has my name on it.

  • somebody probably already said this, but suica supposedly stands for "super urban intelligent card." I just got back from a month in Tokyo, and that card is seriously so convenient... you don't have to take it out of your wallet to scan it, and you can even use it in vending machines!

  • i luv this card... reminder of the good times in tokyo.... only there for holiday though but still... :)
