Weil seine Frau von der Schule gefeuert wurde, wollte sich ein 56-Jähriger im US-Bundesstaat Florida rächen: Bei einer Sitzung schoss der Mann um sich und begang am Schluss Selbstmord.

Der Mann sprühte ein rotes umkreistes "V" auf die Wand, zog seine Pistole und meinte ruhig: "Sechs bleiben, der Rest kann gehen". Nur kurz später kehrte ein weibliches Mitglied zur Sitzung zurück, und attackierte den Mann von hinten - ohne Erfolg. Die Frau durfte den Raum wieder verlassen. In einer längeren Diskussion versuchte der Vorsitzende, den Bewaffneten davon zu überzeugen, die anderen ebenfalls gehen zu lassen - er sei derjenige, der die Kündigungspapiere unterschrieben habe. Ohne Erfolg: Der 56-Jährige richtete seine Waffe auf den Vorsitzenden und drückte ab. Danach spielten sich chaotische Szenen ab: Die restlichen Sitzungsmitglieder gingen in Deckung, der Mann schoss wild um sich. Ein gerade im richtigen Moment gekommener Polizeibeamter traf den Amokläufer von hinten, der sich verletzt selbst erschoss. Wie durch ein Wunder wurden die Sitzungsmitglieder nicht verletzt.

Vorsitzender Husfelt erzählte laut CNN später den Reportern: "Er hatte beinahe ein Lächeln im Gesicht, und sagte, dass er sterben würde."

Fifty six year old Clay Duke complained about his wife being fired by the district before shooting at close range.

He exchanged gunfire with the district's security chief before fatally shooting himself.

Officials with Montgomery Public School district say they have taken steps to stop something like this from happening.

When staff and the public enter the main office at the Montgomery Public School System, they go through intense scrutiny. It's an effort by the school system to keep trouble out and maintain safety inside.

Mona Davis, Public Information Mgr., MPS, says "At all our public meetings and community meetings we have the public enter through metal detectors and our school security staff uses hand scanners so they can scan and make sure that people that are entering the building don't have any weapons or anything they shouldn't have."

Board meetings are often held at another location and sometimes on school property. Regardless of where the meeting is held, everyone is scanned and checked.

MPS officials say they have multiple layers of security in place that go beyond people being scanned by metal detectors and being checked in at the door.

"We always have a sworn officer there either from the sheriff's department or Montgomery Police Department so that's another layer of protection in addition to the metal detector and then our school security staff is really fantastic they're always highly visible they're there in case someone sees something and needs to report something," said Davis.

The school system employs a number of passive security measures as well such as using cameras and recording devices and requiring all staff to show identification at the door.

"I'm hoping that people will feel safe when they come to our board meetings with the security measures we have in place both passive and the ones you see and to know that we're making every effort to make sure they're safe when they come here," said Davis.
