Today it mostly refers to a unique partner dance done in ballrooms and nightclubs. It has some features in common with swing dance. In the 1970s there was also a line dance called the Hustle--which is regaining popularity as people throw 1970s theme parties or schools have 1970s dance performances. Hi, I am ballroom teacher ISTD-cert. In the early 90's Canadians invaded the scene pushing the envelope of classic Ballroom Dancing & started winning international competitions (Intl Style). Young Russians took notice, many already athletes in other disciplines (ballet, gymnastics...). 10 y. later they brought more physically challenging figures & started winning comps. Ck results of OHIO Star Ball 2010 under 21yo 90% of finalist are Russians in all dances, all styles Intl & American

Russians and Eastern Europeans need to spend some time in NYC where Hustle originated to understand the REAL flavor of the dance. Hustle should be smooth, fluid & graceful....more like ballroom. Watch two of the Hustle World Champions, Derrick Allen & Donna DeSimone on Youtube.
