HotOrNot, a dating site that generated $5 million in earnings and $7 million in sales at its peak and recently sold for a reported $20 million, is an example of how a hobby can become a successful venture. James Hong and Jim Young started the popular site eight years ago as a way for people to submit their pictures for others to rate.

  • Unpaid volunteer is redundant, right? 

  • Jim & james made that cash off the backs of unpaid volunteers - & they STILL owe bills for web hosting, bills they never paid!

  • Couldn't agree more, i own a website that's about to near 500k unique visitors this month and growing. I didn't take funding either but happened to be good friends with the owner of the datacenter where are equipment is being held. In return for free bandwidth he asked us to simply put his hosting banner on the bottom of our pages.

    Although were still in infancy stages were doing everything possible to not take funding which is rare for a 25 year old ceo
