The 'land diving' (Naghol) ritual of southern Pentecost island (Vanuatu) is all at once an incredible, terrifying and mesmerising spectacle to witness. See for yourself a guy throw himself towards the ground from the top of a rudimentary tower in the jungle, preceded by some traditional theatrics.
Trekking well into the jungle, we came to a clearing where villagers clothed respectively in just penis sheaths and grass skirts danced, sang and put the finishing touches on a twenty or so metre high tower made of saplings tied with vines. It was the time of year for 'Naghol', an annual event near each village on Pentecost where young males one-by-one prove their daring/virility by tying vines of precise length around their ankles and jumping head-first from a great height such that the vine violently yanks them back just as they almost touch the ground.
Each jump takes place as the singing and dancing of villagers reaches a crescendo and this whole ritual is supposedly also to encourage a good yam crop in the coming year.
It's the ORIGINAL 'bungy jump', except with vines!
it all started by a woman that tied vines to her ankles to excape her abusive husband then when he saw her jump he didnt see the vines and he jumped and died it wasnt a suiter it was her abusive husband

Ive witnessed that. There is about another 14 people that jump off from different heights before that guy (who is the chief of the village) has his turn. It really is an amazing thing to see.
