I've had another song knocked off my list of top 45s to get!

This time, it's the Five Americans' only hit, "I See the Light". This was released on both HBR (Hanna-Barbera) and Abnak Records in 1966, with a hard-to-find yellow vinyl promo on the Abnak label. I believe it got just outside the top 10 on the charts.

One of my favorite garage rock tunes and a HTF one--I paid $3 for it at a flea market, even in this condition!

  • I also have this 45..RIP Jimmy Wright

  • Also likes n lp Michael Rabon did w/ Choctaw

  • Western Union was their biggest hit.

  • This is from the fall of 1965. It got airplay in December of 1965 on KEWB, Oakland. It's on an aircheck from 12-19-65. This is the better version compared to the stereo album version. The organ is louder for one thing.

  • Sound quality is super crappy, why waste your time?

  • I don't believe this song (which is a good one) made it into the top 20. Western Union was there highest chart record (somewhere in the top 10).

I much prefer the album "I see the light" (which I have digitized from my vinyl) to the "Western Union" lp and the rest. "Light" has more energy and a much rawer sound. I love the organ, A rare lp for me for I like every song on both sides

  • @1jtv Hey 1jvt I'm from Dallas as well. Is the club or bldg still there? There used to be a Sharper Image store around there that closed a years ago.

  • @RickenbackerBeatles And Evol Not Love was not bad either.

  • The 5 Americans cut an lp and 3 singles for HBR (I See the Light, Evol not Love, & Losing Game). The bulk of the band's output was for Dallas-based Abnak Records. 5A guitarist Norm Ezell has a music ministry now, and former leader Mike Rabon is involved in education.

  • I see The Light was also recorded as a single in Britain by a Portsmouth based soul-R&B group called Simon Dupree & The Big Sound released at the end of 1966. In fact it was their debut disc, which did not actually chart. Their sole Top 10 hit was Kites in 1967. Thank you for posting as I had not heard the original before.
