The House has voted on extending three key provisions of the Patriot Act. The vote required a 2/3rds majority, and came 7 votes short, with a large number of Democrats, and freshman Republicans, Tea Partiers voting against. Is this a sign of hope for the future of working together? Reason Magazine's Matt Welch weighs in.

  • The Patriot Act is the indicator that we have lost the contrived war on terror. It takes away basic rights. What better victory for the enemies of freedom ? You don't protect your rights by taking them a way -- how stupid is that? The war on terror is simply a tool of the war profiteers, the corporations that buy our politicians & own mainstream news & require wars to keep the money coming in. 2/3 of American corporations don't pay taxes. So we get budget cuts of public services.Dump the PatAct!

  • @kowalityjesus It's all in the Mustache lol.

  • Sign of hope..? No, the patriot act had so many strings attached that there was no way that congress could extend it. It was a violation of our civil liberties. Yes I believe it was for a good reason, but no one bothered to read the fine print.

  • @kowalityjesus i vote yea with you on that sir

  • @justonemorename interesting proposal. treason may not be the appropriate crime though, as it is the only crime defined in the Constitution, and refers to aiding enemies in time of war. it would be cool to have a law that made betrayal of the constitution a crime, but since it would mainly pertain to politicians, who would vote for it?

i like the sentiment, but can't see how that could ever come to pass. these fuckers need some kind of consequences, cos they are selling us all out.

  • if you think the reich won't impose exactly what it likes, and will, under masonic law, anyway - then you are a dong. try passive risistance, first. if that fails, options are closing down.

think - vile, evil slime like bush, blair, and the rest - genocidal mass murderers - crimes against humanity, peace and god, if you ask me - they are actually still alive. this is proof, that there is no law for them, martial law, for you and laws. why? because that is the way you, must like it. why?

  • @justonemorename it already is illegal. Congress is presumed to "act in good faith" - not knowingly pass legislation contrary to the Constitution, and when it comes to the Court, legislation gets overturned. problem here is none of the breaches in civil liberty resulting from the Patriot Act have made it up the SCOTUS, yet. it'd be quicker to stop renewing the damn thing, cos ANYONE who knows the 4th amendment can clearly see it is being violated here.

  • It will still pass. It's just going to be delayed a bit.

  • If you want to see who voted for or against the Patriot Act, Google:

"FINAL VOTE RESULTS FOR ROLL CALL 26"

Far more Republicans voted in favor of the patriot act, showing that Republican's are obviously very fear based.
