An outdoor remotely-controlled non-rigid airship (blimp) was flown at International Seminar on Snow & Avalanches (ISSA-09) organised by Snow & Avalanches Study establishment (SASE) at Manali, India in April 2009 as a technology demonstrator for aerial surveillance & data collection in lower Himalayas.
This airship was designed, developed and fabricated at Lighter-Than-Air Systems Laboratory of Aerospace engineering Department at IIT Bombay. The airship can carry a payload of ~ 5 kg, and can fly for around 30 minutes on one tank of fuel. An I.P. Camera was installed on the airship, and it recorded a series of still images, which were transmitted in real-time using a wireless telemetry system mounted onboard.
This demonstration was conducted in association with Messrs. Jahadirdar Aero Products, Ahmadnagar, India and Messrs. Wavelet group, Pune, India.
