A Night in Venice is an example of a great musical score married to a poor libretto. The Comic Opera Guild filed a theatrical divorce in this 1989 revision by Thomas Petiet of the Comic Opera Guild. Discarding the confusing original book, the new plot centers on Barbara, the wife of Senator DelAqua and the circumstances that make Ciboletta, DelAquas mistress and Annina, a fishseller, disguise themselves as Barbara to meet the amorous Duke. Although the video quality is flawed, the performances justify viewing. Following the previous quartet, the rival senators (Bob MacGregor and Kelley Newton) and their wives (Patricia Petiet and Patricia Billman) revel in thoughts of economic opportunities at the ball.
