Demonstrated are segments of Yilu (first road form) unique to the line of Chen Zhaokui. Particularly this demonstration shows some of the bitter (苦练) "ku lian" practice. It may look easy and flowing but that is only due to years of work.

This method known outside Chen Zhaokui's direct family and local students was also called "xinjia" or new frame (because it was new to them). Within his direct students and family it was simply known as Chen Taijiquan. Some of the distinct qualities of this method are:

+"xiongyao zhedie" (chest and waist multiple folding),
+dantian "chansijin"
+vertical power
+nimble and spritely footwork,
+segmented and defined "duanjin" (short power),
+shorter and low stance without "swimming knee"

Chen Zhaokui's methods, generally known to have been taught to him specially as the only surviving son of Chen Fake, were seen as more thrilling to young people interested in martial arts because (some of the) the martial methods are much more visible and understood to the observer. It is also considered a more direct path to martial skill, although it is widely understood to be exceptionally bitter training and challenging in its depth of intricacy. This is the reason it is either taught later or not at all by the current crop of Chen Village leaders, who received the bulk of their training from Chen Zhaopi, who's less martially explicit, and detailed, perhaps softer training methods came to be called 'laojia' or old frame by the village residents.

There are a very small number of legitimate students of Chen Zhaokui still practicing in China, the significant is of course his only son, Chenyu, who's gongfu is now well known. However, Chen Zhaokui had no tudi due to the risks of openly practicing gongfu during the cultural revolution.

Marin Spivack Chen Family Taijiquan:
20th Gen. lineage holder of Chen Taijiquan became tudi (apprentice/disciple) of Chenyu, son of Chen Zhaokui, grandson of Chen Fake, of beijing China in 2002 while living and training in Beijing. Prior to that training with Chen Jinhong, (AKA Gene Chen - earliest tudi of Feng Zhiqiang, as well as having trained with Lei Muni, Tian Xiuchen and others) of San Fransisco CA, he studied as well with Feng Zhiqiang in Beijing.

Now residing in Boston Massachusetts USA area working daily to develop, preserve and share Taijiquan gongfu.

Classes are offered in traditional Taijiquan gongfu, with bitter practice for the young, gentle practice for the old and health cultivation for all, including original martial art methods from tuishou to sanshou.
