Guts is his name the way you would wright it in english, its not a short form, in japanese pronounciation you don't spell the "u" at the end.

Guts is just a shortes of his name, he is really named Gatzu - But most of the anime they say Guts, like you would call a guy named Alfred for Al or Abraham for Abe
