In his flashback with the reporter, he looks around before talking to the reporter, almost if he's about to share a " deep, dark mysterious " secret with her, that he's not just a jock.
His scientific background is shining through. Too bad he had to pilot the Galactica into the Sun.....

I understand what the writers were trying to get at. There is something intoxicating about pushing your body and mind to the limits of human perfection. I have felt this feeling while playing competitive games like Soccer or Halo.

He reached the end of his road, he slipped his surly bonds & did become connected with everything after all.
I compared to Marcus Cole of Babylon 5, but at the end of that series, he was still waiting in a cryonics unit. The analogy / comparison broke down.
