Reindeer in Finland cry wolves- 05 Mar 08

One of mankind's oldest enemies is creating havoc among reindeer herds in Finland. Rapidly increasing numbers of wolves and other predators are threatening a unique way of life.

People don't seem to understand how difficult the situation is for reindeer herders: the big predators kill more than 50% of the reindeer calves in the area where predator density is high. Finding the carcasses is very difficult, so the state compensations are no solution. The wolf tracking job has to be made without any payment. That is why they shoot every wolf they can.

and as for wolf attacks on humans, typical man eaters are animals that are too weak to take down their regular prey. They often have problems with their teeth and whatnot

So for all the people saying that wolves should not be killed, put yourself in the shoes of a reindeer herder. "Well, wolves are protected so I guess I have to sell all my reindeer and go live in a motel until the money is spent." Doesnt sound enticing, does it? I also want to stress that I am all for conservation, wolves need to be protected, but they also cant be allowed to destroy someones way of life.

I can definately understand the reindeer herders and why they are so pissed off, and I totally agree with the wolf hunting permits, no one can be expected to give up their way of life because the animal causing the problems is protected. BUT, you have to keep in mind that the Wolf is a part of Finlands nature (I am also Finnish), so "kill everything" is DEFINATELY not the answer. The reindeer deaths need to be lessened, but the wolves also have to be protected from overhunting.

Even on a youtube thingy on Finnish reindeer, some Norwegian PC git has to make statements of pacafism, with requests that Finnish UN troops are to bog of from their divisions like cowards. So the Finns are a bunch of cowards?
