Kudda.com http://www.kudda.com/sports presents thousands of free youth sports coaching videos. In this baseball drill, Coach Bernstorf shares a drill he uses to teach how to hit with a focus on the top hand
When hitting a baseball off of a tee, if you are hitting through the center of the baseball (Which will translate to line drives against real pitches) the ball will go straight off a tee. Meaning if you have two tees of the same height and put them 10 feet away from each other, you should be able to hit the ball off of the other tee. And the lower the pitch, the higher the front elbow (This is really difficult to teach, strength/conditioning best way to learn it).
If you are not hitting the ball straight off of a tee (Meaning the ball doesn't arch up or down), you are not hitting through the ball. And the level of the ball determines the angle of the front elbow.
The lead elbow slots up, not forward. You work up. He talks of line drives, which promotes a level swing, level to the ground, not level to the pitch. If someone has a level to the ground swing, how do they hit a pitch at the knees?
The ball is being pitched from a high to low position. The bat needs to meet the ball with same trajectory. LEVEL TO THE BALL, NOT THE GROUND.
