Here are the Hot Five Jazzmakers in "C'est what?" their Saturday matinee residency in downtown Toronto. It is the original stage, before the new stage bar opened up next door. The room is kinda dark but there are some fine jazz moments worth retaining for posterity.
The session was Feb 16/91, just 2 years after their opening at "C'est what?" It is therefore an interesting clip historically too.
The late Jeff Healey was a frequent guest in decade of the 1990's and here he is on cornet, singing the vocal in his own inimitable style.
Don Ogilvie was filling in on acoustic guitar, he was living in Toronto at that time. The original banjo player, John Reid, had left to return to Australia and the band was looking for a regular replacement. Also guesting for a few numbers on that day was pianist Peter Hill. The remaining regular members on stage were Janet Shaw - reeds; Rainer Hunck - bass (soon to switch to banjo!) Brian Graville - trumpet (off-stage for this tune) and leader Brian Towers on trombone. Colin Bray had joined the band permanently on bass around this time but missed this session. Thanks to my old friend Don Chase, who took his video camera to the gig that day!
To see a later clip of the band plus Jeff, with brighter fidelity, check the youtube for "On the Sunny Side of the Street"

  • How I envy those who were able to attend these exhilarating performances at the venue of c'est what-the answer is pure JAZZ!

  • RAA i cant see rainer

  • they may shut down fritzels and make it a dance club, no matter how bad of an idea it is.

  • We rember those Saturday afternoon sessions back in the early 90's at C'est What. "The Hot Five Jazzmakers" would let Jeff sit in to hone his trumpet skills and sing a few songs. They were some of the best days we have ever spent at jazz. Had a couple of trips with THFJ to New Orleans when Jeff showed up for all night jam sessions at Fritzels on Bourbon Street. Great Jazz Great Memories. Ken & Joan Foster

  • This brings tears to my eyes.I wish I had known you guys then. May he rest in peace.

  • I can remember some great sessions with the Hot Five and Jeff at C'est what. This is a good sample
