Great tip thanks, we have pound shops similar thing, time to start shopping, as far as I am concerned the cheeper the better I have some mics off of disfunctional cameras. I know the feeling about the rain same here,

>>>edit it onto the video later
i use a freeware program call audacity (d0t c0m) for this editing. works really well. it allows you to amp the sound, and remove ambient noise.

hey, I went looking around. what i found is what they they call "shotgun" microphone (also called parabolic). here is a pretty neat video on how to make one at home from stuff you get at the dollar store and an old telephone headset.

he tests on a bird next it sounds pretty neat.
if i see something better i will send it to you.
where i am it rains all the time, so i need something either waterproof, or very very cheap.

the only thing I can suggest is using a computer type microphone next to or fixed right agianst the nest, I am going this approach this season. another option maybe is leave the recorder within 12 inches to record the sound and edit it onto the video later, I need something like this myself.
