This is a collection of my family 8mm films of diving and water skiing in Puget Sound, Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish in the 1950's and early 60's. My father Clark Wheaton began diving in the late 40's with a group of buddies including Don Osborne. We made our own wet suits and tanks. The earliest shots here show Clark with his early dry suit and there are shots of his "Peachy Suit" from which he got his nickname Peachy. This video includes shots of the Tacoma Octopus Wresting Championships which occurred each year in those days.

  • Nice to see all those historical frogman latex rubber drysuits coming together. Unfortunately the 8mm picture is blurred and of course there was plenty of animal torment in that era.

But apparently there existed more sheet rubber suit designs and colours at the same time than I expected. Were they all by Skooba Totes? (The green chest entry one looks weird; is it Russian?? Nowadays there is only the Hydroglove replica dive suit available in black (or do they also make such other variants?),

  • what a great trip back in time!!
