Coen Brothers do most unusual dark work around. And I've always found it to be outstanding as long as it's their own material. Don't care as much for them directing work from other's sources.
the coen's write great films for the most part. i am not a huge fan of their early works as directors. roger deakins compliments their films extraordinarily.
