Lear visited India in 1873-5, in his early 60s. The new Anglo-Indian vocabulary entranced him and he used many of these terms in comic reversal of their accepted meaning, in this poem. The surreal image of 'green ayahs' perched alone on tallest trees is stunning. And as for the reiterated 'She sat upon her dhobi'.....well!
