What happens to my shirt
when I remove the red
white and blue "vote" button
and lay it to rest
next to some extra dimes?

Sure, it will eventually
leave me here cold and naked
before the day is through
- perhaps you will remove it
and come in close
to caress that scar my sister
gave me when she threw
that pocket dictionary, and
kiss me lightly
as it finds a home on the
puffy white floor
or perhaps I will take it off
myself, and toss it absentmindedly
into the mahogany basket
to be washed.

But what will become of the hole
where the small metal rod
once stuck through the fabric?

Will it disappear as soon
as the act is through?
will it simply blend
into the blue graphic tee's
tightly woven cotton
as a small part of the whole
ensemble, a blemish
on an otherwise clear-faced
facade.

I don't imagine that I'll be
rid of it, at any rate,
no, no.

There are no twelve labors
to be done, no,
the button will leave its mark,
but I imagine the dimes
under the lamp
on my bedside table
will be mighty glad of the company.
