Resting in the sun this carpenter bee has an electric blue abdomen and wings tint and at nearly 3cm long is quite impressive when it flies past. Often seen on lavender and wysteria flowers.

  • ohhhhh sooo thats what the big bad black monsters in my moms garden are :D

  • Yep carpenter bees! They are very impressive and beautiful when the sun catches the blue of their wings. Unfortunately they can persistently bore deep into the wood on the edges of roofs, and although there's a ecological way of dealing with them, people sometimes resort to pesticides. Shame.

  • "ahh, the sun feels good on my back". . . (is probably what the be is thinking...if bees can think)

  • Yes they just love the sun... and as insects are cold-blooded they need the sun to get going in the morning.
