Pipe Major Tom Coulson was a combat piper during WWII, serving with the Essex Scottish 4th Brigade in Europe. He joined the Essex Scottish in England following the Unit's massacre at Dieppe.
553 men of the Essex Scottish landed at the Dieppe Beach, in what turned out to be an unsuccessful invasion attempt of mainland Europe long before D-Day.
Only 52 men of the Essex Scottish returned from that raid at Dieppe without being killed or captured.
Tom Coulson's piping instructor was Pipe Major Willie Ross. Tom spoke often of Pipe Major Ross after leaving the Canadian Army and moving to the US. Tom was a firm believer Pipe Major Ross' teachings and piping style.
Tom continued Pipe Major Ross' teachings and excellent piping style through his own, many students.
Tom Coulson taught, over the years, a number of fine pipers who are active, today, in Military Memorial Ceremonies all across the US and Canada.
The tradition of excellence continues. His recorded teaching instruction, now placed on CD, is still being used as an outstanding learning tool for military and civilian pipers.
Pipe Major Coulson continued to regularly pipe well past his 80th year.
This recording of the tune, Flowers of the Forest, was made by Pipe Major Coulson when he was many years into his retirement.
Pipe Major Coulson passed away on Easter Sunday, 2009.
He is missed.
