Maxima Cambodia - Field Visit (2)

*field visit to Maxima's loan customers on the island of Koh Oknhatey in the middle of the mighty Mekong river 18km outside of Phnom Penh.

*proprietor's name is Kreung Heang who is a 54 year old local of the island
-1st loan cycle was in March, 2010 for $600
-funds were used to purchase silk and cotton for weaving of sarongs that they sell in over 16 open markets in the district
-funds are additionally used to purchase seed for tomato, corn and sesame on their property
-they provide a hair cutting service as well for the village (1,500 riel for children, 2,000 riel for men per haircut)

Ltd. who is the microfinance organization we are working with was founded in March 2000 by a group of friends with the objective of providing financial services to low income clients through small loans to individuals, groups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). MAXIMA aims to contribute to the economic and social progress of rural Cambodia by making credit available to those who lack access to loans from traditional commercial banks. By making credit available to the rural poor, MAXIMA's clients, using their natural skills and harnessing their entrepreneurial spirit, are given the opportunity to start a new business or expand upon an existing one. Such sustainable access to credit, allows for those living in rural areas to achieve social and economic progress not only for their families but also for their communities
