Born in 1960, Debasish grew up in the musical enviroment of his late father, Dhana Gopal Ganguly, a flautist and composer, who had mesmerised him with his constant musical creativity so essential to a composer and had lovingly taught his son singing as well as the tabla. This upbringing inspired him to earn an MA in Instrumental Music from Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata (Calcutta) and to become a disciple of late Acharya Ajoy Sinha Roy and also to win prestigious awards like Sur Mani.

Later, Debasish also took training and guidance from Padma Vibhushan, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Ustad Dhyanesh Khan, Ustad Ashish Khan, Shri Amiyo Bhattacharya, Smt. Sisirkana Dhar Chowdhury and Pdt. Soumitra Lahiri.

Debasish has been performing for over twenty years to profuse admiration. Like at ● Australia Institue of Eastern Music, Sydney ● Kal-ke Kalakar Sangeet Sammelan, Mumbay (Bombay) ● Haridas Sangeet Sammelan, Mumbay ● Kala Academy, Goa ● „Indian Cultural Week Festival, Berlin ● „Indian 50 Years Independence Festival, Indo-German Society, Hamburg ● Kaltenburg Folk Festival, Germany ● Veena Maharaj Sangeet Samaroha, Rishikesh ● Asian African Institute of the University of Hamburg ● International Yoga Festival, Esztergom, Hungary ● Summer Festivals in Barcelona and Malaga ● Ratha Yatra Indian Festival, Münich ● Peer van Havwe Music School, Inning, Germany ● Ratha Yatra, Antwerp, etc.

Debasish also performs on various European channels like the French/German TV Channel, Arte.

He continues to perform all over the world, particulary in Australia, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, etc.

Teaching

Another passion of Debasish is to spread Indian music to all corners of the world, conducting regular workshops like in Music School Seevetal, Germany, Hamburg School of Music, etc. He teaches Indian classical music and sitar-playing. He was an advisor in the formulation of the Hindustani Music Performance Practice Course at Monesh University, Melbourne. He was tought practical and theoretical aspects of sitar playing in a 13 week course at Monesh University, Melbourne and as a teacher at the 7th International Course at the Pierre van Hauwe Music School, Inning.

Other Interests

Debasish has also composed music for the much admired film „Island, directed by Paul Cox, and shown at the Cannes Film Festival and Kolkata Film Festival. His music has also been used in other films like Paul Coxs „Golden Bread.

His recordings have been published in various casettes and CDs. He composes music for dance drama and theatre.

He has also been interrested in and has been inspired to participate, create and collaborate in fusion music between classical as well as folk musics for fusion jazz groups in Europe. In 2010, he has directed the entire music in the lauded topical documentary "GURU" directed by Tamás Tóth.
