When Bach was left an orphan at age 10, he and his 13 year old brother Johann Jakob moved to Ohrdruf to live with his much older brother Johann Christoph. At 15 Johann Jakob moved back to Eisenach to be apprenticed to the organist. J. S. Bach wrote this piece when he was 18 when his brother joined the Swedish army as a musician as has been pointed out. The last two movement, particularly the brilliant fugue, aren't quite as sad!

@SFChristo Well I don't think playing the oboe would save him from the anomalies of war. Most of the people in Charles XII didn't die from shooting etc, but from other diseases cause by travels, awful conditions in military camps, prostitution etc.

The brother was acctually going to play the oboe in the military band of the swedish king Charles XII I belive. I might be wrong. Lovely playing.

@HerrWarja Oh that's good to hear. I actually had been "worried" about the brother! (never read up on him).

@whneo97 I don't know. Maybe people aren't so into slow Lamentations.
