Etude de Concert, Op. 35 No. 2, Automne - Cecile Chaminade
Guest Pianist: Jeff Almonte

Special Thanks to Prof. Jonathan Coo

The GSIS Thursday Concert Series is a joint project between GSIS and the Philippine High School for the Arts Alumni Association. It aims to become an established venue for professional and emerging artists to give free public concerts. The Audience is also allowed to view the museum collection for free, which includes priceless sculptures and paintings by our very own National Artist Abueva, Amorsolo, Ang Kiukok, Bancab Francisco, Joya Manansala, and Ocampo.

Chaminade wrote prolifically, and nearly all her approximately 400 compositions were published in her life time. Although she wrote orchestral pieces (including the successful piano Conzertstucke, and flute Concertino, a symphony and a ballet), her most popular works were her piano pieces, most of them character pieces, and more than 125 melodies. The music is tuneful and highly accessible, with clear textures and mildly chromatic harmonies, with a typically french wit and colour. She made extensive concert tours as a pianist, performing regularly in England, including as a welcome guest of Queen Victoria. Many Chaminade Clubs were formed in the USA around 1900, and in 1908 she made a tour of twelve American cities. The later 20th century disparagement of late-Romantic French music meant that interest in her music died after her death.

  • The way you play....you should post more videos!!!! share....share... and share to inspire...inspire and inspire...

  • @blueyoyi Thanks so much, blueyoyi and family! How I wish I were a piano whiz so I could play and record a different piece every week. I'm a late bloomer with the piano and mostly self-taught so learning a piece does not come easy for me. But as Dr Ingrid Santamaria would advice me later, I need not study a huge repertoire. I just have to learn a few and play them from the heart. You've made my day, week even!

  • Awesome, too beautiful, and loving performance :)

  • @micky2mooh Thank you, sir! You are too kind. :)

  • It was an amazingly beautiful, relaxing, charming...Love your performance!

  • @OldRabit Thank you so much for watching! I'm very happy that you like the video. I memorized this piece years ago but it is only recently I dared play it in public when I felt I was musically grown up enough to play it for others. Your compliment is telling me that it worked! Thanks again! :-)

  • JEF! What an absolutely magnificent integration of beautiful music played with such heart and soul, colored with nostalgic autumnal paintings and surrounded by such warm evidence of heartfelt friendships in an elegant GSIS museum setting with a full grand. What more can one ask except MORE, MORE, MORE! Kudos, Orchids, Accolades, Jef, and may there be MORE to come!!!!!!!

  • very nice piece and great playing! waiting for your next videos.

  • @composerdoh Thanks for watching! Yes, it's a pity that only a handful of her works, including Autumn, are still part of the active concert repertoire. But through YouTube, I think more and more pianists are rediscovering her neglected compositions. Thanks again!

  • Gorgeous- and very well-made video!

I'd never heard of Chaminade before- thank you so much for sharing!
