Unfortunately the sound was lost in the editing. There is another video listed with sound.

Construction article: http://woodgears.ca/reader/roller_chain.html

Wood Roller Chain 2" center-to-center pin spacing. The purpose of this drive is to see how well the wood chain will stand up to use. The top sprocket is turning 41.3 RPM. The top and idler sprockets are running on a 5/8" wood dowel axles.

November 25, 2010 - The chain has run over 1548 miles.

Turned off Nov 25th for the winter months. It was too cold in my garage for the gearbox grease in the small reduction drive motor.

Restarted April 8th

May 1st - chain has run over 2047 miles with no signs of wear.

July 5, 2011 - chain has run over 3582 miles with no signs of wear

  • Today it has run 3582 miles with no wear. Grease gets too thick in the gear motor to run it in Winter. I run it 24/7 only in warm weather. You can load anything to the point of wear or destruction. It is a display item. The small motor is fully loaded just running the chain. High humidity can cause the links to swell enough to stall the motor. I think that shows very little wear on the links. Shop warms up, humidity drops and it runs again. I am quite confident it would run a fan with no wear.

  • you're not going to get much wear on it without any stress on the chain.
