Amusing video of hummingbird trying to feed. This is a female species (Eugenes fulgens), second largest species in North America.During the winter, these birds travel to Mexico for warmer climates. There are over 18 species around the world. This one in particular (Magnificent) is a female whereas the Males develop a blue ring around their necks. Average lifespan is 3-4 years, possibly longer. The average heartbeat per second is 50-1000 -yes that's beats per second! Their wing-beating rate can average from 15-80 flaps per second, depending on the species. Families leave together around October, and during the migration periods from Mexico, Males arrive first and usually return to the same location. On the West Coast where winter climates are milder, Hummingbirds can stay year-round. For those who have feeders, be sure to keep them clean and mix the nectar 4:1. Towards reaching the winter, Hummingbirds need as much energy resources as they can find for the exodus.

  • Nice video! Thanks for sharing. Glad to hear that you make your own nectar (although the red dye is not necessary).
