  • did they put tin foil on that dude??

  • True heroes!

  • @OmonasLT Maybe their children will be deformed or have cancer, but I doubt if there are many of them still alive after 30 years

  • Gee you think they could have come up with a better solution.. they tried robots, didnt work obviously but why not try a bobcat with major lead shielding. One guy could sit in that thing for way longer and get tons more work done. They could have fabbed some of these up in a day or two just like on monster garage, and heli dropped them in place. Would probably need a small hole you see out, and some air system. Even then they could have shift rotations.

Reactor #4 exploded > its roof was mostly gone > radioactive debris fell on adjacent buildings and their roofs, mainly #3 > debris had to be shoveled back into the #4 and its pit.

Trick is these biorobots were not actually told how dangerous (read: lethal) this operation was.

Also, they needed more protection from underneath and for hands.

And no, not all/most of them died - still, they are in poor shape and were certainly not rewarded for their heroism well enough.

  • @MacTavishSAS : wasn't it reactor number 4 ?

  • The goal was to remove the extremely radioactive graphite and other debris off the roof so a sarcophagus could be made. They tried robots at first but the high radiation destroyed their circuits, so humans had to go. 3,500 guys took turns a few minutes at a time shoveling material off the roof so it could be immediately buried. They were exposed to uncharted amounts of severe radiation, resulting in radiation sickness, cancer, and death. They died so others might live. Straight up heroes.

  • @Doppelbuckel one of the few who stayed alive long after they were there saving our lives
