New Year's in Broad Channel is celebrated by everyone flushing their toilets at the same time. It's quite a sight--it raises the whole island by four feet!

One of these days, the TBTA will detach both bridges from Broad Channel, transforming it into the new Atlantis.

This line dates back to the 1890s, when the LIRR built it. They made an agreement with the BMT to run their own trains on it, connecting via the Fulton Street El, duing the summers. The MTA acquired it in the mid-50s after the LIRR couldn't afford to rebuild the northern trestle once it burnt down due to a smoldering cigarette. They began running the trains to both Rockaway Park and Beach 25th Street beginning June 28th, 1956. (They didn't run to the current Mott Avenue terminal until 1958.)

I went to the Broad Channel Branch of the Queensborough Public Library once, just so I could read the book. It's a children's book: "Cesspool Sing-Alongs And Low-Tide Lore For Rainy Days," written by "The Old Man With The Radio."
