New 2009 Fuel Economy Comparison: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySR0flj6QnQ

These days there are a lot of small cars pounding their chests and claiming they get the best gas mileage around. Well, we got tired of the talk and decided to settle the score. Right here, right now!

We picked three cars from our long-term fleet known for squeezing extra miles out of every gallon of gas: the spunky 2008 Smart Fortwo with a 1.0-liter, three-cylinder engine, the thrifty 2008 Ford Focus SES coupe with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and a 2005 Volkswagen Jetta TDI, with its legendary 1.9-liter "TDI" diesel engine. Then we added a heavily favored gasoline-electric hybrid to the mix: a 2008 Toyota Prius.

  • @JAPANTUNER100 It's called English. It's taught in quite a lot of schools. Also you seem to think I care if you take me seriously? I bet you love the smell of your own farts too.

  • @JAPANTUNER100 That's a well thought out, descriptive post. Kindly elaborate on what part was invalid for all us people who love to see you type.

  • I have a smart car and first car off a red light leaving the crowd and driving down the interstate weaving and passing at 90 + MPH ( I had it up to 97 and 100 a few times on smooth road its fine) I averaged 43 MPG!!!

when I drive it easy I have seen 52 MPG

    it Impressed Me..

lacks in space and only seats two though..

  • My Smart fortwo cdi does 83.5 mpg in average once I got it to 110 mpg.

  • @filmftw3 VW diesels are very reliable, much more than their gas engines.

  • @cdltpx fueleconomyDOTgov is very biased towards american made cars. It claims a chevy cobalt will get close to 35, when 29-30 is the actual. Also, claims my forenza gets 26, when i pull 31-32 always. driving it like i stole it.

  • FueleconomyDOTgov is a site that has a fuel cost calculator. You can plug in numbers for a car vs another car and you can see if it really is worth it to be smart or sexy or both if you don't need a car specialized car to get laid. So if you are car shopping I highly suggest you give it a whirl. I did and we evaluated our use and are strongly considering getting a full electric car to back up our prius. Since the prus has range but daily we basically do 15-30 miles round max. Big $ saved here.

  • @JustAnotherGay96 so true

  • Diesel is really expensive where I live, it is $0.70 more per gallon over regular gas. That combined with VW's bad reliability and constant repairs puts it over my budget. With Prius I am worried about batteries going after 3-4 years. That is a major expense. Smart Fortwo chews engines like no tomorrow and uses premium fuel. In the end I think Ford Focus or Prius would be the cheapest to own, overall.

  • The Prius also is the biggest!! and the new Prius is even better!! Whoo, Go Prius!

  • I know one trick which will save alot of fuel money. It's called garage!

  • I'de even take the Ford over driving a vagina. (Prius)
