This is the first movement ('Non allegro') of Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances, recorded in Moscow in October 1995 by the State Symphony Orchestra of Russian Federation conducted by Yevgeny Svetlanov.

About this work, Svetlanov told once what follows: "I freely confess that Rachmaninov's «Symphonic Dances» are not only my favourite work by this composer but my favourite piece in the whole repertoire. Imagine how difficult it is to make such a statement. Some things are inevitable, like a first love. The fate of this piece is of major, personal significance for me."

  • @TheVaughan5

The other two movements of this version are now uploaded.

  • exceptional thanks

  • The best performance I have ever heard.

  • It's the cellos with the violins in unison on that wonderful tune that makes me want so badly to play this with my orchestra.

  • Thanks so much for posting this, anything conducted by the great Svetlanov is worth hearing even though some of his last recordings might have lacked earlier passion he was nevertheless one of the all time great conductors. This is marvellous!
