A battle over hummus and tabbouleh is shaping up between Lebanon and Israel -- two neighbours still technically at war -- with efforts under way to clearly identify such dishes as exclusively Lebanese. 'In our mind tabbouleh and hummus should belong to the Lebanese just as feta cheese belongs to the Greeks', said Fadi Abboud, president of the Lebanese Industrialists Association. 'Now when hommus is known all over the world as an Israeli Kosher dip or a Greek dip, that's not fair', he added. 'This and other foods like tabbouleh are all Lebanese specialities and they should be registered as such'. He said his group is preparing to go to the European Union to register the names of certain dishes as Lebanese. Legislation is also pending in the Lebanese parliament to protect the names of certain geographical locations specific to Lebanon so that products cannot be marketed under the name of a town or region.

  • If your "National Treasure" is a pile of fucking BEANS, then you need to take a deep breath and think how fucking stupid you must be!! Beans. Lmfao!!!

  • @sngncwby - Americans love everything which can be used as 'ammo', right? Beans are extremely useful, even the 'non-fucking' varieties. ;-)

  • LOL come on people, Israelis making hummus isn't theft, it's appreciation of a fine Arab dish. Would you call a Lebanese chef who cooks pasta or sushi a thief? Of course not, because it's ridiculous. Instead of hating, sit back and enjoy the awesome hummus!!

  • @goldtintedspecs

Making hummus is not theft, of course. Enjoy this excellent Lebanese dish.

See 'Occupation of Shabaa Farms now an issue '

  • Moreover, Israel still has occupied territory in the South (Shibbaa Farms)...if Future TV (which is a pro -government channel) doesn't give the negative connotation off Israel, it will disappoint many of those who are against it..and little things like that (believe it or not) will be able to cause civil strife, because those anti-government opposition people are very extreme. The media in Lebanon, especially pro-government are walking on a tight rope 90% of the time. It's a shame to be honest

  • @tFighterPilot I totally agree! However, this is the only problem. This is 100% objective..the situation in Lebanon is complicated, because you have all the political parties against each other. The Hezbollah and anti-government supporters will not be happy if Israel was referenced to as an ordinary country...besides, there was a recent war with Hezbollah, and most Hezbollah supporters (Shiite Muslims) have lost their homes and towns...

  • @nerdheadbanger The problem is not the way they say it, it's what they say. Why can't they use the word Israel in a sentence that doesn't have the word enemy? Are they afraid that people might forget that Israel is the enemy? It's kind of like in Nineteen Eighty Four "We are at war with Eurasia, we've always been at war with Eurasia"

  • @tFighterPilot Well, as a bilingual Arab, I can assume it's because the Arabic dialect spoken on the news is the classical one. So it sounds very bland and very formal, giving that extreme connotation, especially in its vocabulary.

  • Even the news anchors of the Arabs talk like extremists. I think the real question is "Why so serious?"
