The issue of immigration is age old, and our Catholic tradition has wrestled with these questions long before Columbus set sail from Europe. The problems and issues surrounding immigration today in America are legion, and if Catholics are to play their God given role in helping to resolve these challenges we must seek wisdom from both our tradition and the Word of God. Both indeed have much to say to this topic, from Israel's status as a resident alien in Egypt and Babylon, to Augustine's articulation of immigration in his classic work, The City of God, to Thomas Aquinas's account of immigration according to natural law, Scripture and the Catholic Tradition have amazing resources to provide us with not only principles but practices and language necessary to discern the right response to this perplexing problem.
