@KB4QAA... You're right, the Dubliners have been playing it for about 50 years, but it goes way back before that. I would say it goes back to the days of the highwaymen. The narrator would appear to be a highwayman and he mentions rapier and pistol, weapons that were popular in the 17th century.

@lolsokje This song dates to the mid 1700s. The Dubliners have been playing for about 50 years. Metallica wasn't even born. 'Nuff said.
