I think you'll find the original played by Reed Martin not on a 78 but on an LP from Kicking Mule, 1978, called Old-Time Banjo in America. Reed is a great and inspiring clawhammer banjo player. You can also find him on a CD from 1998 called 'Old Time Banjo'. Good work, young man. Keep on learning from the masters.

keep it up, Dan. clawhammer is so much fun, and fairly easy once you get the knack. one bit of advice for a new player--I'd recommend you get some medium gauge banjo strings (as opposed to light, which is what most new banjos come with) the reduced flexibility of the strings makes techniques like drop thumbing much easier. good luck!
