Placido Domingo - E lucevan le stelle

Caruso also had difficulties with his high notes and sang the higher arias transposed down a half step. It's not unheard of with dramatic tenors (some of whom begin with a high baritone range), and shouldn't be the basis for criticizing Domingo. Funny enough, Caruso also faced the same criticism despite unquestionable vocal beauty and interpretive genius. Few can come close to either Domingo or Caruso with this aria, transposed or not. Opera is about so much more than the key . . .

except that thats how domingo sings. hes a dramatic tenor as apposed to a lyric tenor like pavarotti.

Geesh, everybody's a critic. This is great; who cares what key it's sung in. If you think you can do it, let's see it.

This was stunning...a wonderful performance!!! Congratulations, Placido!

Nobody, I say, NOBODY sings this area as Placido does. From the very heart.

The issue with this aria is not the high notes which are A-natural. The problem it causes is because of the high tessitura of the whole piece. There are repeated G's and all of it sung stringento and with passion. Very tough.
I heard a tenor sing it transopsed down a half tone when a week earlier I had heard him sing a B-natural in Nessun Dorma a full tone up.
