I had the same problem. The sensor just gets stuck. If that happens just take a small neodymium magnet and wave it over the back of the phone in a figure 8. Unstuck the sensor for me twice.

This is a normal behaviour...one would think the sensor keeps the calibration data. Somehow it doesnt. So what you guys need to do is to "wave" the phone around in kind of every direction...random movements do the trick. After this short procedure, the compas works very smoothly and reacts in a normal way.

this is easy... just shake the phone a few times in all directions, and it resets my compass every time. you can even do it walking down the street swinging your arm.. just hold the phone one way, swinging your arm, then hold the phone another way and swing it around a few more times.. it recalibrates the sensor every single time!!!

same problem on the htc wildfire >:(
-
U have switched to Inverted Mode !

@ongksj Yeah that's what I meant xD

@ongksj Yeah. It is silly to eight-calibrate the phone every time you start a GoogleSky or Layar. Also looks like an iPhone has the same problem too.
I have the same problem on my Legend! Fuck! it turns up-down ok, but left right - very random. That pisses me off. No Layar, no GoogleSkymap works correctly :(

@xelectriquex According to an engineer from HTC, its normal. I was told it got to do with the sensor in the phone. So my guess was, it's another design flaw of Legend beside the button issue.

Just push the menu button and then push the Omega something like that button to turn that off so you can slide it with your finger instead....

@MGApcPro I tried, it didn't work and HTC told me that it's normal.
