I went looking for The Wildest Pig in Captivity and found the National Seven. My apologies to Mr Renbourn and all of you JR purists out there. I'm just having a bit of fun. I think the tuning, Dm (DADFAD) is wrong for both, but works at least partially - and I don't aspire to being able to work out the originals by ear. I've always loved National 7, one of my favorite JR songs.
The lyrics are by Alun Tunbridge and I think the first version of this song was actually arranged and sung by Wizz Jones, by John's was the first version I ever heard.
The National 7 is the road that leads south out of Paris and ends at Saint Tropez - rather like France's Route 66. In the sixties and seventies, Saint Tropez was a great place to go busking - the jet set are all there in July and August! This song was actually written by Alan Tunbridge and first performed by Wizz Jones

  • Actually i have recently recevd a tab from JR himself for Wildest Pig - it is in DADDAD !! tuning - i kid you not!

I havent tried it yet as it seems a strange tuning to me

Anyway - a really fine version of N7 certainly the best on the Tube

  • @fingerstyleguitarman Cheers, DADDAD's a tuning that John Martyn used a lot early on. I've got a tab of Wildest Pig, that's been around for a while but it's in DADGAD. I'm pretty sure that John plays National Seven in standard tuning. John's one of my first guitar heroes - I love his playing.

  • Brilliant. My dad played this to me when I was a boy and it was always one of my favs. Not herd in in ages.

  • @eddiejamison Thanks :o)

  • its not by renbourn........

  • @harryjohnbrennan No, but I think that's clear from the description. If I didn't mention John Renbourn, then the danger would be that someone would say - sounds like a rip-off of a John Renbourn tune. I dislike it when people do not give credit where credit is due, so .. I'm sorry if you wasted your time coming over to listen in. I don't take music or myself that seriously - this little effort was meant as a musical joke - obviously a flop :o)

  • JR is still one of my all time greats. I will ask him in May in Spain at his next workshop if N7 is in standard tuning. I always thought it was drop D.

  • Nicely done ... and you certainly look the part! I just wish you had looked into the camera when you sang.

  • Beautiful

    Equal to Renbourne

  • Thanks !
