In October 2009, volunteers from the non-profit Hug It Forward travelled to Guatemala to help the community of Granados, a remote mountain town, build a "Bottle School" from waste plastic trash.

We worked closely with the community to clean up plastic bottles and inorganic trash around the town -- and then used this trash to construct the walls of the new building. The revolutionary technology enabled us to build a school much more cheaply than using the cinderblocks that are usual in Central America, as well as helping to clean up the local environment. • LOVE-ly video for an especially LOVE-ly project.

This is especially inspiring, and I'm sending it to friends of mine who are building schools in other parts of the world.

The beauty of this project is that it doesn't require much in the way of "permission" or "support" from some of the agencies or established power structures which are sometimes the cause of the problem (-lack of schools for the poor communities).

  • @salgreco Thank you for your comment and for your support! Bottle schools are such a simple and effective idea with so much potential to help the world. Where are your friends building schools?

  • this should be mandatory to solve polution onces and for all

  • Does anyone think that these walls could be used to build the walls of a tiny house(100 sq ft) on a dual axle 8x12 flatbed trailer? Or do you think it would be too heavy or could crack under pressure on the road? Just curious. Love the video!

  • I like your project! It's gorgeous! I would like to promote this kind of building schools in far villages in Kazakhstan, which is my motherland. I am really proud of you and the things that your ambitious team do :-) go straight in that way. world needs people like you

  • @HUGitForward My friends are building schools in the poverty-stricken areas of Jamaica.
